2023 PBI Data Breach of CalSTRS Information
12-2-24 Update
Recently Cassandra Lichnock, CalSTRS CEO, alerted CalRTA that some of the data obtained has been released on the “dark web,” a part of the internet that is only accessible by means of special software, allowing users to remain anonymous. In early December, you will receive a letter from CalSTRS with details.
Though no new data breach has occurred, it is recommended to remain vigilant in monitoring your credit. CalSTRS offered free credit monitoring for 24 months to those affected by this incident last year. If you opted in to that service you’re still covered.
If you are concerned and do not currently have credit monitoring, here are a few things you can do now:
- Review your credit report,
- Keep an eye on your accounts for unfamiliar charges, and
- Check trusted resources – such as credit bureaus – for more tips on securing your financial data.
CalSTRS is continuing to closely monitor their systems and member accounts for suspicious activity. Cassandra has assured us that, to date, there has been no unauthorized access to the CalSTRS secure network or member or beneficiary accounts.
That’s what we know right now. We’ll share any updates if/when they become available. In the meantime, please direct any questions to CalSTRS at 800-228-5453.

Temporary Suspension of Earning Limits Ends
In January 2022, Governor Newsom issued an executive order to help California school districts address staffing shortages related to the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing districts to hire retired teachers and public education personnel more quickly and efficiently. In February 2022, Executive Order N-04-22 extended the Governor’s suspensions through June 30, 2022. The executive order has officially ended; however, it is possible for a retiree’s employer to apply for an exemption to the 180-day separation-from-service requirement. (Read More)
