Highlights …
Repealed the WEP & GPO – CalRTA victory! Advocacy works! Thanks to decades of advocacy by CalRTA, President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law on January 5, 2025. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) penalties no longer threaten to reduce your earned Social Security benefits!
Increased $$$ to oldest retirees – CalRTA successfully co-sponsored SB 868 (Cortese), which increased purchasing power for California’s oldest retirees via payments from the SBMA fund.
Protected future retirees from payment mistakes – CalRTA successfully co-sponsored AB 1667 (Cooper), which protects future retirees from having to pay for mistakes made by districts or the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Sued California for $500 Million … when Governor Davis didn’t make a payment to a CalSTRS fund that protects our oldest retirees we helped sue the state.
Cut pensions? We don’t think so! … public pension opponents try time and again to get pension cutting measures on the ballot and we keep defeating them!
Putting a Face to Teacher Issues … state legislators know our members by name because we regularly visit local and state legislative offices.
