Eva S. Hain 2003-2005
President Hain’s term began with a huge challenge:to collect enough money from CRTA’s members to fund participation in the lawsuit against the State of California for recovery of the $500 million withheld from the Supplemental Benefit Maintenance Account of the State Teachers’ Retirement System. the appeal met with huge success, with over $300.000 collected from members.
Also challenging the SBMA was the proposal of the Bush Administration to withhold the annual payment due from the sale of Elk Hills ; CRTA will continue to work to assure that the remaining payments are made in good order.
CRTA faced a unique situation in the fall of 2003 – the recall of Governor Gray Davis and all the unsettled political conditions attendant to that event. CRTA’s own governance was much more stable; President Hain has continued many of the policies and programs of the previous administration. The Board of Directors continues to work on new Bylaws and the streamlining of the Standing Committees and meetings of the CRTA. For the first time, the 2004 Convention will combine its customary work with the inservice for division presidents which has been so long requested by that group. The Fall Council has been transformed to a more streamlined meeting of the board and Standing Committees to prepare them for the Fall Area workshops.
President Hain ‘s term will continue until the close of Convention, 2005. It is expected that CRTA will have seen closure on many projects and that much more will remain to be accomplished to make CRTA the “dominant, authoritative voice for all California’s retired educators.”
